World No 2 Andy Murray has ruled himself out of this year's US Open due to a hip injury.
The 30-year old, who won the US Open in 2012, has not played since losing in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last month, where he struggled with the ongoing problem.
The Scotsman's prospects of playing the season's fourth grand slam, which begins on Monday, looked to increase when he travelled to New York last weekend and spent the week participating in practice.
However, Murray admitted on Saturday that "time had run out" and confirmed discussions will now be held to decide his options for the remainder of the year.
"I did pretty much everything I could to get myself ready here," Murray said.
"I took a number of weeks off after Wimbledon, spoke to a lot of hip specialists, tried resting, rehabbing to get myself ready here and was practising OK the last few days but it's too sore for me to win the tournament and ultimately that's what I was here to try and do, so unfortunately I won't be playing this year.
"I certainly wouldn't have been hurting myself more by trying to play. It was more a question of whether it would settle down in time. I kind of ran out of time.
"I spoke to a number of specialists about it to get the best advice possible. Obviously, when you speak to a lot, there are different views and opinions on what the best thing to do is moving forward, and that's a decision I'll need to take now.
"I'll sit down and decide with my team in the next couple of days, for sure."
The three-time major winner joins reigning US Open champion Stan Wawrinka, Novak Djokovic, Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic who are already on the sidelines.
Murray was due to face American world number 104 Tennys Sandgren in the first round and his spot in the draw will be taken by fifth seed 2014 champions Marin Cilic.
