Gael Monfils has reached the US Open semi-final after ending the impressive run of his compatriot Lucas Pouille.
Monfils ran out a 6-4 6-3 6-3 winner in the all-French quarter-final at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday to seal his progress into the final four.
Pouille, the 24th seed, had previously shone by eliminating Rafael Nadal, but rarely looked likely to prevent Monfils sealing his first Grand Slam semi-final since 2008 at the French Open.
Monfils, the 10th seed, first broke to sneak a 4-3 lead which he quickly converted into taking the opening set. He opened the same score-line in the second set and which point rain forced both players to take an extended break until the brand new roof was closed to protect Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Monfils broke within moments of their return to go two sets ahead, before swiftly running into a 3-1 lead in the third - Pouille's steam had long since run out.
Monfils will meet the winner of Novak Djokovic versus Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - worryingly, he has never beaten the world No 1 Djokovic in 12 attempts.
