Johanna Konta books second-round place at Wimbledon

Johanna Konta produced a superb display to avenge her French Open defeat to Su-Wei Hsieh and advance to the Wimbledon second round.

The British No 1 has only once gone beyond the first round at the All England Club but served notice of her claims to become the first British woman since Virginia Wade in 1977 to claim a Grand Slam singles title with a 6-2 6-2 victory.

Hsieh had won both previous encounters between the pair, including a first-round defeat at Roland Garros just a few weeks ago, but there was no stopping Konta to the delight of the Court No 1 crowd.

Sixth-seed Konta suffered little trouble on her own serve, other than a break midway through the first set, but her power game was too much for the craft of Hsieh and the Briton was able to break at will.

A run of five breaks of her opponent's serve from six attempts broke the back of the match for Konta, taking her from a 2-1 lead in the first set to a 6-2 4-1 advantage that Hsieh never looked like recovering.

For Konta it was a boost after she was forced to withdraw from her semi-final in Eastbourne last week following a nasty fall in her victory over Angelique Kerber on the South Coast but, moving freely as well as firing a succession of winners, she delighted the crowd and her team who looked on from the player's box.

"I'm feeling well," Konta said. "I'd hit on Sunday, that was kind of the first test to see how I was doing. I felt absolutely fine and it was no different today. I'm not feeling any pain."

Next up for Konta will be Donna Vekic, the Croatian who beat her in the final on the grass courts of Nottingham just over a week ago and beat Russia's Natalia Vikhlyantseva in three sets late on Monday night.

"That's another great opportunity for me to play against someone who the last time I played played a very good match," Konta said.

"It's another opportunity for me to try and find a way to come out on top this time but most importantly, I'm looking forward to having another round here and competing the best that I can."
