Petra Kvitova is the latest seed to suffer an early exit at the Australian Open after a second-round defeat to Daria Gavrilova.

The Czech sixth seed paid the price for an error-strewn display as she suffered a 6-4 6-4 defeat to her 21-year-old Australian opponent.

Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion, is another big-name name to depart the tournament after surprise defeats for Simona Halep and Venus Williams.

Cheered on by a partisan crowd, Gavrilova took full advantage of 35 unforced errors from Kvitova, who was broken five times in the 89-minute match.

Kvitova rallied to save a match point and break back for 5-4 in the final set, but Gavrilova claimed victory when the world No 7 went long with a forehand in the next game.

Moscow-born Gavrilova, who paired up with Nick Kyrgios to win the Hopman Cup for Australia at the start of the year, will play France's Kristina Mladenovic in her first trip to the third round at a Grand Slam.
