Heather Watson has failed to progress past the first round at the Australian Open after losing her opening match to Timea Babos.

The British No 2 served for the match in the second set, but Babos fought back to level and then completed a 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 7-5 win to inflict another early exit on Watson.

Watson has only reached the second round of the tournament on one occasion and new coach Judy Murray was unable to break this wretched record in Melbourne.

The 23-year-old had played two matches in one day at the Hobart International last Thursday and her demanding schedule appeared to take its toll during a closely-fought encounter.

After edging out Babos in the first set tie-breaker, Watson appeared on course for victory when she broke the world No 60 in the second.

But the Hungarian broke back to level at 5-5 and then claimed another break from the wilting Watson to force a decider.

Watson again worked her way into a 4-2 lead in the third set, only to quickly surrender her serve again, and Babos held her never during a break-filled spell to claim victory with a backhand down the line.
