Novak Djokovic's Olympics are over after he and veteran partner Nedad Zimonjic were dumped out of the men's doubles by Brazilian pair Bruno Soares and Marcelo Melo.

The world No 1 was back in action the day after he left the Olympic Tennis Centre in tears following his defeat to Juan Martin del Potro in the singles.

That was a defeat he described as "one of the toughest" of his life as his wait for an elusive Olympic gold medal continues.

The opportunity to win one in the men's doubles alongside 40-year-old Zimonjic went begging too, after the duo were brushed aside 6-4 6-4 in the second round by the third seeds, inside 73 minutes.

Djokovic, who has confirmed he will not be playing in the mixed doubles, has only won one Olympic medal - bronze in 2008 in singles. He will be 33 when the next Olympics in Tokyo take place in 2020.
