Johanna Konta says she is ready for a 'gladiatorial fight' as she bids for Wimbledon success

Johanna Konta is in bullish mood ahead of Wimbledon and says she is ready for a "gladiatorial fight".

The British number one reached the semi-finals last year before falling to Venus Williams and is in confident mood ahead of the tournament, which begins on Monday.

Konta, who has been seeded 22nd in the women's singles draw, believes she can become the first British woman to win the singles title at Wimbledon since Virginia Wade in 1977.

She said: "I am ready for a gladiatorial fight this year. I have learnt a lot since reaching the semi-final last year and I am confident I can go one better.

"I will be exciting and I will be aggressive. I want to make a statement."
