Elina Svitolina warms up for French Open with win in Italian Open final

Elina Svitolina won the Italian Open for the second year running after beating Simona Halep 6-0 6-4 in the final.

The pair squared off in a repeat of last year's final but Svitolina wrapped things up in just over an hour this time, while the 2017 title-decider went to three sets.

However, as happened last year, the top-seeded Halep appeared troubled by an injury.

The Romanian called a trainer onto the court for an apparent back problem while trailing 2-3 in the second set and then exited the court for treatment under a medical timeout.

Svitolina did not face a single break point in the match and the world No 4 became the first woman to defend the title at the Foro Italico since Serena Williams accomplished the feat in 2013 and 2014.

The Ukrainian, who has now won the last eight finals she has appeared in, stormed out of the blocks and kept Halep under relentless pressure, serving at a high level and chasing down everything that was sent back.

Halep improved in the second set, but was held back by unforced errors, finishing with 21 in the match.

The tournament is the last major warm-up for the French Open, which starts next Sunday.

Regarding her prospects in Paris, Svitolina said: "I will try to take one match at a time, it's very important in a grand slam.

"It's very tricky so we'll see how it goes, but definitely I'm going to enjoy going to Roland Garros on a high note.

"It's amazing that I could come and defend my title here. It's really something very special for me."
