Dominic Thiem took his frustrations out on his racket during his defeat to Fabio Fognini

Dominic Thiem smashed his racket in fury on his way to losing to Italy's Fabio Fognini at the Rome Masters on Wednesday.

Austrian Thiem, last week's Madrid finalist, crashed at the first hurdle to an inspired Fognini 6-4 1-6 6-3 in just over two hours on Centrale.

Fognini kept his nerve while Thiem took out his frustration on his racket after handing his rival three match points before handing the remains to a spectator in the front row.

The Italian then sealed his first win in three meetings with the Austrian to set up a clash with Germany's Peter Gojowczyk.
