Benoit Paire showed his disgust with a line call by spitting on court during his defeat against Denis Shapovalov

Frenchman Benoit Paire showed his disgust at the chair umpire's decision to not allow him to challenge a point by spitting on the court during his defeat to Denis Shapovalov at the Madrid Open.

Shapovalov hit 38 winners to defeat Paire 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-4 in more than two hours in a second-round match in the Spanish capital.

But the match was overshadowed by Paire's actions at 2-2 and 30-30 in the second set when he challenged his serve, but only after netting the return.

The hot-headed 29-year-old then took out his frustrations on chair umpire Richard Haigh before spitting on the red dirt of the La Caja Magica - an action which Sky Sports commentator Barry Cowan described as "disgusting".
