Elina Svitolina ended Naomi Osaka's remarkable recent run with a 6-4 6-2 triumph over the Indian Wells champion in the second round of the Miami Open on Friday.

The 20-year-old Osaka, who is ranked a career-high 22nd in the world after winning her first career title at Indian Wells last weekend, recorded a famous first-round victory over eight-time Miami champion Serena Williams earlier this week.

But her winning streak came to an end with a loss to fourth-seeded Svitolina on Friday as the Ukrainian Svitolina, who last month claimed the sixth title of her career with her triumph at the Dubai Open, faced little resistance to win in 83 minutes.

Svitolina will face either Australian 26th seed Daria Gavrilova who beat Germany's Andrea Petkovic in their second round encounter.

The tournament's biggest shock also came on Friday night as Australian Open champion and world no 2 Caroline Wozniacki slumped to a shock 0-6 6-4 6-4 defeat to Monica Puig.

The 27-year-old looked on course for an easy victory after racing through the first set without losing a game in less than 30 minutes before the wheels fell off.

However Puerto Rico's Puig, who won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Summer Games, clinched the win with a blistering forehand winner on the second match point.

Australian 21st seed Ashleigh Barty also reached the third round with a 6-0 7-6 (7-0) win over American wildcard Claire Liu.

Among the other key matches to be played in the women's draw on Friday are clashes between eighth-seed Venus Williams and Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva and Danish second seed Caroline Wozniacki's battle with Puerto Rico's Monica Puig.

Victoria Azarenka is through to the third round after US Open finalist Madison Keys was forced to retire with a leg injury.

Belarusian Azarenka is a three-time winner of the tournament and was up by a set and a break when Keys ended the second-round match.

The first set went into a tiebreak after the world No 186 failed to capitalise on two set points when serving for the match, but she prevailed on a tie-break which featured nine breaks across the 12 points.

Azarenka will play Anastasija Sevastova after the Latvian beat Alize Cornet of France 7-5 6-4.
