British No 3 Cameron Norrie lost in the first round at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells to Japan's Taro Daniel 6-3 1-6 6-1.

Norrie, 22, had come through two rounds of qualifying having seen off Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky and American Christian Harrison, but found himself losing the first set 6-3 after 34 minutes in his first ever main draw match at Masters 100 level.

Norrie battled back to dominate on serve in the second, eventually taking it 6-1 to set up a deciding set.

Daniel, ranked 109th in the world, raced through the final set 6-1, wrapping up the match in an hour and 46 minutes.

Daniel now faces five-time Indian Wells champion Novak Djokovic in the second round.
