Spanish veteran Feliciano Lopez battled back to defeat Marin Cilic and secure his maiden Aegon Championships title at Queen's Club on Sunday.

Lopez, who held a championship point in the 2014 final against Grigor Dimitrov before crashing to a three-set defeat, clinched his first ATP title since Gstaad in July 2016 after losing in the Stuttgart final last week.

He saved a match point and secured a tight and tense 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (10-8) victory on his third championship point to avenge that painful loss.

"Wow, I cannot believe I have finally won this trophy," Lopez said. "It was tough to put that match (against Dimitrov) away from my mind. I was serving for the match again and it was difficult to handle my nerves. I was waiting so long so I'm so happy today."

The 35-year-old was trailing by a set to the big-serving Cilic, and needed two tiebreak sets before holding his nerve in a gripping finale to overwhelm the world No 7 for his sixth career title and third on grass.

Lopez saved his match point with a steely volley at 5-6 in the breaker before Cilic fended off two. Then, at the third time of asking, crowd favourite Lopez could celebrate after fourth seed Cilic pulled a forehand into the tramlines.

The Spaniard has never gone past the quarter-finals at the All England Club but he will be one of the form players in Friday's draw.

Cilic, 28, lifted the Queen's trophy in 2012 and finished runner-up to Andy Murray a year later, but must now finish off the doubles semi-final which he was partnering Marcin Matkowski against Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, which was not finished on Saturday because of rain.
