Hooker Tom Youngs says he is "convinced" England can still qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals despite Saturday's damaging defeat to Wales.

England appeared to be in charge of the Pool A encounter when they went 19-9 up early in the second half but Wales mounted a memorable revival to win 28-25.

The group was named the 'Pool of Death' prior to the tournament and England now almost certainly need a win against Australia next Saturday if they are not to become the first host nation to fail to reach the knock-out rounds.

If the season had ended now, it would drag out that much longer. The best thing after a defeat is having a game after it. Now we can really focus our minds on this weekend.

But Youngs is adamant England can get the win they need and says the squad are pleased to have a chance to redeem themselves.

Asked on Sunday if he believed England would still qualify, Youngs said: "I am very convinced, because of all the hard work we've done over the last 12 or 13 weeks, because we're a tight-knit group.

"It's a challenge we accept and one we are all looking forward to.

A big talking point after Saturday's match at Twickenham was England captain Chris Robshaw's decision to turn down a tricky late kick at goal which would could have levelled the scores, in favour of setting up a failed attempt to score what would have been a match-winning try from a line-out near the Wales line.

But Youngs said the team all backed Robshaw and that the series of second-half penalties they conceded was the real cause of the defeat.

Asked whether the team need to support Robshaw after his controversial decision, Youngs said: "It's not about rallying around Chris, it's about rallying round each other."

"We back it all, back the group, back the decision. We went for the win.

"I don't think the game came down to that one moment. It came down to moments before that, 20, 30 minutes before that, when we were giving away penalties and letting them back into the game.

"Ill-discipline from us let them back in the game and it was a real shame."

And perhaps the biggest shift in momentum came when Wales levelled the scores at 25-25 after Gareth Davies scored a great try under the posts following a brilliant kick-ahead from Lloyd Williams.

"It was a great effort," said Youngs. "They got on the outside of us and kicked the ball inside and it was a fairly good pick-up to score. It was one of those moments you can't quite believe it's actually happened."
