Georgia rest key players for New Zealand clash

Georgia coach Milton Haig is resting a number of players for the World Cup Pool C match against New Zealand in Cardiff on Friday with an eye on their final group game against Namibia.

Haig will have only five days to prepare for the Namibia clash and is taking no risks, given that Georgia still have an outside chance of reaching the quarter-finals for the first time and a stronger shot at finishing third in their pool to earn automatic qualification for the 2019 tournament.

"We are looking for a bit of energy to face the All Blacks and it is right to make some changes," Haig said.

The players left out for Georgia's first ever game against New Zealand were naturally disappointed.

"It is tough telling players they are not facing New Zealand, but they have bought in to our long-term goals and understand where we are trying to get to," Haig said.

Haig is himself a New Zealander but he said: "My loyalty and responsibility is to my team. It will be a special occasion for me and I am looking forward to it.

"For Georgian rugby it is pretty historic and being in a World Cup makes it even more special. They love the game in Georgia and there is a great camaraderie in our team.

One man who has not been dropped is captain Mamuka Gorgodze - 'Gorgodzilla' - of Toulon. He has been one of the players of the tournament so far with some ferocious displays from the back row.

The other seven members of the pack who started in the 54-9 defeat to Argentina are either benched or rested.
