European Rugby Challenge Cup: London Welsh beaten by Bordeaux-Begles

London Welsh are still looking for their first win of the season after being beaten 52-20 by Bordeaux-Begles in the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

Having lost six out of six in the Aviva Premiership as well as their European opener in Lyon last weekend, Welsh would have hoped to finally break their duck against opponents who went down 15-13 at home to Edinburgh in Round 1.

However the Top 14 team bounced back in impressive fashion, running in seven tries in total and securing the extra bonus point before half time had even arrived.

Seb Jewell and Daniel Browne did touch down for the hosts but it was another tough outing for London Welsh, who will now hope upcoming fixtures in the LV= Cup will offer an opportunity for them to get up and running.

They did take the lead in the early minutes at the Kassam Stadium, Olly Barkley landing a penalty before missing another attempt at the posts soon after that would have doubled the advantage.

Bordeaux made the most of the repreive, going up the other end of the field to grab the opening try. Superb handling from the visitors set up the chance for winger Lucas Blanc to touch down, with Pierre Bernard adding the first of his six conversions.

Chance

A second Barkley penalty cut the gap to a solitary point, only for London Welsh to almost immediately offer the chance for their opponents to get three points of their own.

Bernard duly accepted the opportunity to kick for goal, while he was also on target with the conversion after Metuisela Talebulamaijaina had kicked the ball forward and managed to touch it down just before it rolled dead.

A third Bordeaux try duly arrived when a catch-and-drive from a lineout was finished off by Clement Maynadier, and the bonus point was secured when more good handling set up Matthew Clarkin to dive over.

Flty-half Bernard knocked over the conversion to make it 31-6 at the break and although London Welsh did manage a try of their own early in the second half through Jewell, that only seemed to inspire Bordeaux to pile on the points.

Bernard scored their next try and also kicked the extras on his way to a 20-point personal haul, while full-back Darly Domvo helped himself to a brace to carry the away team beyond the half-century mark.

Sandwiched in between Domvo's double was a try for Browne that Barkley converted, Gordon Ross helping set up the chance for the forward by taking a quick tap penalty that caught the away team short of numbers in defence.
