Warren Gatland is expected to draft as many as six extra players onto the British and Irish Lions tour next week.

The Lions' reinforcements would be primed to take seats on the bench in Tuesday's Waikato clash against the Chiefs, to add to his options ahead of the crucial first Test against New Zealand next week.

New Zealand sent a strong warning to Gatland's squad by hammering Samoa 78-0 on Friday, scoring 12 tries in the process.

The three-Test series against the All Blacks starts on June 24 and the Lions play the Maori All Blacks on Saturday and the Chiefs on Tuesday, with both kicking off at 8.35am (BST), live on Sky Sports 1.

Gatland had initially raised the idea of adding a clutch of players to his squad when he was unveiled as Lions head coach back in September, in order to protect his first-choice Test 23.

Wales are in New Zealand and Scotland are touring Australia and Fiji, while Ireland and England are a bit further afield in Japan and Argentina respectively, however the latter's tour in South America finishes on Saturday.

Discussing the Lions squad, All Blacks boss Steve Hansen hinted at a potential disconnect between midweek and Saturday line-ups.

Hansen said on Thursday: "I think he is about to bring a few extra players out to give himself the ability to play with two squads."

But Lions assistant coach Steve Borthwick insisted on Friday that they will maintain a tight-knit group, even if they do call for reinforcements.

He said: "I've been hugely impressed by the leadership of the players. All the players have worked hard to ensure it's a tight, socially cohesive group."

The Lions bolstered their squad late on in Australia four years ago, with call-up Alex Corbisiero claiming a try as the tourists stole a series win in the third Test in 2013.

However, the Lions may have to do without influential fly-half Owen Farrell, who remains a serious injury doubt ahead of the first All Blacks Test.

The England star has suffered a quadriceps strain and is now in a race against time to be ready to start the Test series.

The Lions face up against the Maori All Blacks on Saturday with the match kicking off at 8.35am (BST) live on Sky Sports 1.
