WATCH: Lions selection debate ahead of squad announcement

Stuart Barnes, Scott Quinnell and Stephen Ferris discuss the potential Lions squad ahead of Wednesday's announcement

With just four days until the Lions squad announcement, Stuart Barnes, Scott Quinnell and Stephen Ferris discuss who will be on the plane to New Zealand.

With speculation intensifying on a daily basis, we asked three former Lions tourists to pick the players they expect to feature in Warrren Gatland's plans, a decision that for Quinnell is increasingly difficult.

"I think that is the problem this year" said the No 8 who toured in 1997 and 2001. "You could probably pick 20 or 23 players in years gone past no problem at all. A couple of little bolters here and there, the odd surprise.

Pick your Lions XV

Who would you pick to take on the All Blacks?

"This year there's going to be ten back row players that are going to go on tour and I pick 23 players I would be happy to take on tour so there is going to be 13 guys sitting around at lunch time on Wednesday watching Sky Sports News going 'I can't believe I am not in that' and we will be sitting there saying 'we can't believe he is not in that'."

One player singled out a man Stuart Barnes would like to see tour is scrum-half Richard Wigglesworth.

The Saracens man hasn't featured for his country since the 2015 Rugby World Cup but, with four Premiership titles and a European crown under his belt, Barnes believes he possesses the control and tactic nous that could be needed to topple New Zealand on their own patch.

"For me, I have one bolter and I don't think Gatland will pick him but I think he should and that is Richard Wigglesworth," said Barnes. "If you're talking about territory and someone who can boss a pack instead of being its servant, Wigglesworth is as good as anyone.

"The reason he is not in the England set up is he is 33 and Eddie Jones, quite rightly I think, is obsessed with Tokyo. That is the key, he thinks he's too old but the Lions tour is going to take place in June and July. He's playing the best rugby of his life and he plays exactly how I think the Lions want to play the game tactically."
