Tom Youngs is the big omission from England squad says Will Greenwood

Will Greenwood gives his reaction to Eddie Jones' first England squad

Will Greenwood feels Eddie Jones has got the balance right with his first England squad but says Tom Youngs is unfortunate to be overlooked.

Jones has selected seven uncapped players in his elite player squad ahead of next month's Six Nations, including in-form back rows Jack Clifford and Josh Beaumont.

But experienced players such as Tom Wood and Brad Barritt miss out, as does Leicester hooker Youngs, who was first-choice for England at the World Cup.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, World Cup-winning centre Greenwood ran the rule over Jones' 33-man squad.

Backs

I've been a big fan of Ollie Devoto for a long time. He got embroiled in the Sam Burgess/Kyle Eastmond affair at Bath because Burgess was playing 12 when he came over from rugby league and Eastmond had played at 12 for England against New Zealand.

He was a 19-year-old kid who had to pick up the pieces and when George Ford went to play at fly-half for England in last year's Six Nations, Devoto stepped in at 10. His form wasn't brilliant but he's very much an inside centre.

England coach Jones explains his selections

The thing that fascinated me in terms of an open goal being missed is that there had been this clamour for Henry Slade, who is a fantastic player. But when he is not fit, why have we not got the next Henry Slade, which is Ollie Devoto?

The same error was made when Jonathan Joseph was seen as our wide man at 13, the next Jeremy Guscott. Who is his like-for-like replacement? Elliot Daly. But he didn't make the squad.

England's uncapped seven

We look at the new faces in Eddie Jones' squad

There was a little bit of inconsistency but this seems much more of a like-for-like squad. Daly and Joseph are at 13 and we bring Devoto and Sam Hill in to cover the 12 jersey. Two definitive 12s.

Regarding Danny Cipriani's omission, there are only so many jerseys you can give out. Jones' out-and-out fly-halves are George Ford and Owen Farrell. They'll both be in the match-day 23 against Scotland.

Worcester director of rugby Dean Ryan discusses the exclusion of Danny Cipriani

The fact that Devoto and Hill are injury replacements for Manu Tuilagi and Slade suggests they are stepping in to get some experience. It looks like Jones will go with a Ford-Farrell 10-12 combination at Murrayfield.

If there was a 34-man squad, Cipriani is No 34, just behind two really talented fly-halves.

Forwards

Jones has also been definitive about his seven. It looks like he'll go with Kvesic, who is the main out-and-out seven in club rugby.

Jack Clifford plays across the back row and was at No 8 against Saracens. Is Clifford an eight or seven? You don't want to get into that debate and the out-and-out seven in this squad is Kvesic.

England defence coach Paul Gustard thinks Maro Itoje is ready to step up

Maro Itoje has stormed onto the scene. He has captained Saracens and England U20s, can play at four, five or six. He's a real destroyer of lineout mauls and drives. He's an athlete; one of those second rows who can get up in the air without a lift and compete for the ball.

The interesting one for me is Josh Beaumont; I'm chuffed for him. Billy Vunipola is playing outstandingly well and will start against Scotland but Beaumont, whichever team he has played for he's been successful.

It's a tough call on Tom Youngs. Jones has gone with Jamie George, Dylan Hartley and Luke Cowan-Dickie but the latter two are not playing at the moment.

Beaumont has great hands, has plied his trade at Sale and not gone to one of the big four clubs. Steve Diamond has brought him on fantastically well. He will be a huge asset to English rugby over the next decade.

Tom Wood hasn't played much rugby since the World Cup. Chris Robshaw has moved across the flank at Quins and is playing really well at six. James Haskell is there too so you can understand that decision.

It's a tough call on Tom Youngs. He is extremely unfortunate. Jones has gone with Jamie George, Dylan Hartley and Luke Cowan-Dickie but the latter two are not playing at the moment.

Youngs, who is a successful British and Irish Lion and was first-choice hooker at the World Cup, has found himself usurped by three hookers, two of which aren't playing at the moment.
