Great Britain defeat Argentina to advance to rugby sevens Olympic semi-finals

Watch Dan Bibby's match-winning try against Argentina

Great Britain are through to the semi-finals of the men’s Olympic rugby sevens after earning a dramatic 5-0 sudden death victory over Argentina.

The game had ended scoreless in normal time, but Dan Bibby produced a moment of magic in the first period of sudden death against the Pumas to book their place in the last four.

Team GB had James Davies to thank for the game being scoreless at half-time after he produced a brilliant turnover near his own try line just before the break.

Dan Norton came close to scoring for Team GB late in the second half but his progress was halted by what looked like a high tackle that went unpunished by the referee.

Argentina lost Juan Imhoff to the sin bin in the final minute and Davies followed him in injury time for a high tackle that gifted the Pumas a penalty and the opportunity to drop-kick the winning score.

They could not convert however and Britain patiently worked their way up the field in sudden-death extra time to win a penalty but Tom Mitchell hit the post with the drop goal.

Earlier they had defeated New Zealand 21-19 to advance through to the knockout stages as pool leaders and they remain unbeaten in the competition following opening day victories against Kenya and Japan.
