Leinster and Ireland out-half Joey Carbery will be playing his provincial rugby for Munster next season after his move was confirmed by the Irish province on Thursday.

The 22-year-old, who has found himself behind Johnny Sexton and Ross Byrne this season, was initially linked with a move to Ulster earlier in the season as a replacement for the outgoing Paddy Jackson, but reportedly declined such a move.

Having met with Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt to reportedly discuss his Test future ahead of next year's World Cup in Japan, and reportedly met up with Munster head coach Johann van Graan this week, Carbery has now confirmed he will be joining Leinster's biggest rivals ahead of the 2018/19 season.

Carbery has made 37 appearances for Leinster since making his debut in 2016, registering 101 points and was part of their historic double winning campaign this season, earning Champions Cup and PRO14 winners' medals.

For Ireland, the playmaker has earned 10 caps and scored 22 points, featuring off the bench four times in their 2018 Grand Slam success. He is also part of the current Ireland squad set to travel for June's three-Test series against Australia, live on Sky Sports Action.

"I understand why Leinster would be desperately keen to hang onto him and why it's a huge bonus for Munster," Schmidt said at Thursday's press conference ahead of Ireland's tour to Australia.

"It's new news to me. I haven't had time to digest it personally. It's a decision Joey has taken a bit of time over. It doesn't seem to have affected his performances any. I think he's played very well.

"All we asked was for Leinster to ask if Ross [Byrne] or Joey were interested in going up to Ulster. Ulster were looking at a foreign option, so we wanted to see if there was interest.

"I honestly wasn't sure what he was going to do. I thought quite possibly he was going to stay put. I haven't had that much time to think about it. I've had a quite a few other things on my plate."

Munster currently already have a total of four out-half's contracted within their squad in the form of Ian Keatley, JJ Hanrahan, Tyler Bleyendaal and Bill Johnston.

Keatley has been linked with a move to Ulster but as yet nothing has been confirmed, nor have the details regarding Carbery's move and whether it is a loan deal or permanent. It is believed he has agreed a a two-year contract with Munster.
