Connacht centre Bundee Aki has given the firmest indication yet that he intends to pursue an international career with Ireland.

The Kiwi-born back signed a new deal with the Western province on Tuesday, turning down lucrative offers from the Top14 in France and England's Aviva Premiership.

Aki, 26, signed for Connacht from the Chiefs in 2014 and will become qualified to play for Ireland in October 2017.

Back in August, Aki had stated a desire to play international rugby, but also commented that "it's wrong for me to say that I'm Irish".

Now though, for the first time, Aki has revealed discussions with Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt have taken place and announced his desire to go on and represent Ireland.

"Joe [Schmidt] has spoken to me. He has been giving me feedback about how I have been performing and things I can work on," Aki said.

"I want to play rugby to the highest level, and if that opportunity arrives then I will take it with two hands.

"But my main focus at the moment is my provincial contract. I am playing with Connacht and I am trying to do as much as I can to make us play really well."

On signing his new three-year deal to remain in Galway, Aki added: "There was heaps of other options but I was happy where I am.

"People chase money sometimes and it doesn't work. If you are enjoying your rugby, why move?"
