South Africa fly-half Handre Pollard says Wales are tactically astute and "relentless" but lack flair as they prepare to face them in Sunday's World Cup semi-final.

The Springboks have lost five of their last six games against Wales, including four in a row, and Pollard is expecting another tough match in Yokohama.

"They know what they are good at, and focus on that. They are relentless in those areas," he said.

"They starve you of possession and territory, and enforce their kicking game on you. They take away your set-piece. It's not a game-plan or rugby with a lot of flair in it, but it's suffocating.

"If you fall into that trap, they will enforce their game-plan on you for 80 minutes and you will probably not win that match.

QUIZ: Wales vs South Africa at RWCs

Wales face South Africa for a place in the Rugby World Cup final but how well do you remember their previous World Cup meetings?

"Lately, we've struggled against them. It's always our last game on the end-of-year tour after a long season and in Cardiff.

"It's always tough, and you never have all your guys fit and ready to go. So, it's going to be nice to play them on a neutral ground with the teams having most of their guys available for selection.

"It's going to be a really interesting Test match.

"It's going to be two sides tactically really trying to figure each other out, feel each other out for the first 20 to 30 minutes, and then enforcing whatever plan we made all week, and trying to put the pressure on them."

Both teams have lost key players, with ankle injuries sidelining Wales full-back Liam Williams and South Africa wing Cheslin Kolbe.

Pollard added: "It's part of the game, and luckily we didn't lose Cheslin for good. He will be back next week.

"But with S'bu [Nkosi] coming in, we have all the trust in him. He is an unbelievable young talent, and I am sure he is very excited to showcase to the world what he can do."

Yokohama's International Stadium - venue for both semi-finals this weekend - was left saturated by heavy downpours on Friday, and the forecast is potentially for more rain on Sunday.

"We don't select our team based on the weather," Pollard said.

"But going with the six-two split [six forwards and two backs among the replacements] certainly helps when it's wet.

"It's going to be a big set-piece battle and gain-line battle, whether it is dry or wet.

"We have prepared for that. It looks like it is going to be wet on Sunday. Whatever comes our way, we will handle it."
