"He commands huge respect from his peers. We are thrilled that he has extended his contract through to the end of 2019."

Read, who is currently recovering from surgery on a broken thumb, made his debut against Scotland in 2008.

He is expected to be back in time for the first Test against the British and Irish Lions in Auckland on June 24.

All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen said: "It's wonderful that he has committed through to the next Rugby World Cup in Japan."

On his battle with the thumb injury, Read added: "It's a bone break so you've got to let it heal.

"We'll X-ray it again and then it's a return to play process. That gives me two weeks before the (first) Lions Test which should be plenty of time."

Other New Zealanders to have signed through to 2019 include Sam Whitelock, Ben Smith, Anton Lienert-Brown, Owen Franks, Israel Dagg, Brodie Retallick, Aaron Smith, Julian Savea, Dane Coles, Sonny Bill Williams, Joe Moody, Patrick Tuipulotu, Liam Squire, Nathan Harris and Liam Coltman.
