Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond has played down the prospect of New Zealand-born wing Denny Solomona playing international rugby union for England.

Solomona - who scored a record-breaking 40 tries for Castleford Tigers in Super League in 2016 - switched codes at the end of last year and has already scored eight tries in five Premiership matches for Sale this season.

The 23-year-old has made one appearance for Samoa in a rugby league international but talk of Solomona playing rugby union for England or the British and Irish Lions has gathered pace in recent weeks.

Solomona will be eligible to play for England through the residency rule on March 9 - three years since he played his first match in England for London Broncos in a Super League clash with Warrington.

"Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon," Diamond said. "Let us look after Denny the way we are.

"We aren't in a rush to get it sorted. It's down to him whether he wants to."

Solomona remains the subject of a compensation claim from Castleford after quitting the club in December with two years left on his contract. Castleford's subsequent legal action looks set to be adjourned, raising the prospect of an out-of-court settlement.
