Steve Diamond reacts to Danny Cipriani's move to Wasps

Steve Diamond is not sure Danny Cipriani's move to Wasps will provide a major boost in his bid for an England recall.

Cipriani was confirmed as a Wasps player for next season on Tuesday, the fly-half taking advantage of an option in his Sale Sharks contract to return to the club he started his career with.

Sharks director of rugby Diamond said Cipriani's reason for moving was to force his way into Eddie Jones' England squad, having missed out on the 33-man Elite Player squad named last month.

But Diamond is not sure the move will prove a help, as he told Sky Sports News HQ: "There's no point having someone here who wants to be somewhere else. We gave a couple of players options like that.

"Danny had been thinking hard and fast - his old club Wasps are similar to us in the league but they have got a lot of ambition by the looks of things, or so some people think. So he exercised the option this week.

"To be honest it came as a little bit of a surprise because we thought he had decided to stay, but it's his prerogative and he chose to take that option.

"His reasons are very clear. He thinks that by going to Wasps, he'll play for England. I feel it's a little bit misguided.

"I think Danny has been a fantastic player for Sale Sharks and for England when he got back into the reckoning playing for Sale, and I think there is a bit of a misconception if you go to a club in London or the south - and they are actually playing in the Midlands - there is a bigger opportunity."
