Wasps director of rugby Dai Young says he expects Leigh Halfpenny to decide whether he is joining the club by the end of the week.

The 27-year-old has the option to extend his two-year deal at Toulon for a further 12 months and the French club are keen for him to do so, but the Welsh international remains undecided about his future.

Halfpenny is weighing up a number of offers from France, Wales and England but Young is anxious to discover whether Wasps will secure the British and Irish Lions full-back.

"We're hoping we'll get an answer on the Leigh Halfpenny situation this week," Young said. "We genuinely don't know what he's doing as it stands.

"If you look at all the comments from the people he's talking to, I think everybody's scratching their heads about it to be honest.

"Obviously he's got a number of decisions to make, and he's taking a bit of time out to sit back and make a decision. But we expect a decision this week. We haven't had any contact over the last week or so.

"The feedback we've had is that he's going to make a decision but that he needed a little bit of time away, which is understandable.

"It is a massive decision, I know he's got options to stay in France, he's got a chance to go back to Wales and there are one or two teams in England who have shown interest as well.

"We'd be over the moon if Leigh does come but he's got big decisions to make really."

Young also revealed Wasps are in advanced talks with club co-captain James Haskell about a contract extension.

"We're more or less well down the road on that, so we'd expect that to be sorted very quickly," said Young of Haskell's potential new deal.

"It's an easy one for us - we want to keep James and he wants to stay. So we'd expect that to be sorted within the next week.

"It's great news that he wants to stay and help us in the journey we're on to move this club forward."

Haskell was included in Stuart Lancaster's 31-man squad for England's disappointing World Cup campaign, coming off the bench against Wales and starting against Uruguay.

New head coach Eddie Jones has publicly stated his desire to revamp England's back-row but Young believes he would be foolish to overlook the 30-year-old Haskell as he builds towards the next World Cup in Japan in 2019.

"James (Haskell) has the right mind-set, he wants to keep improving and he's hungry to continue playing for England," Young said.

"I know I'm biased and I won't hide that but I don't see many better options for England than James out there at the minute.

"And we forget he's only 30 so there's no reason why he couldn't play until the next World Cup.

"I think he's a genuine option to go right through to the next World Cup, so I'd be very surprised if he wasn't in the mix really."
