Harlequins have issued a statement re-affirming their support for Joe Marler after the prop was hit with a two-match ban and £20,000 fine.

The 25-year-old England international was punished by World Rugby after a misconduct charge against him was upheld at a hearing in London on Tuesday.

Quins say Marler has accepted his mistake and are adamant that he remains a key figure at the west London club.

The misconduct charge related to comments Marler made to Wales prop Samson Lee during a Six Nations match at Twickenham on 12 March.

Marler subsequently apologised to Lee and was not punished by Six Nations officials, but World Rugby launched independent action.

The Harlequins man will have to sit out a Challenge Cup quarter-final against London Irish on Saturday and a big Premiership game against Saracens at Wembley the following weekend.

"Joe is a long-serving, first-class and valued member of our squad. He is also a highly influential and important player in terms of his experience and the positive impact he brings to the rest of the squad, and the young players coming through the ranks of the Academy.

"Joe recognises that he is a role model and takes this position, as a part of his profession, seriously. He has accepted that he made a mistake and has apologised to all those he offended. These actions are in line with the man we know and respect.
