Warren Gatland acknowledges George North may have been knocked unconscious playing for Northampton on Saturday

Warren Gatland feels Wales and Northampton winger George North needs to take some time out from rugby after suffering another head injury last weekend against Leicester.

North was cleared by doctors to continue playing for Northampton against the Tigers despite replays suggesting he had been knocked out following a tackle by Adam Thompstone.

The 24-year-old has suffered a series of concussions over the past two years and went on an enforced five-month break from the game after suffering four head blows in five months between November 2014 and March 2015.

Northampton announced on Tuesday North will not resume playing until he is cleared by an independent expert and Gatland believes that is the correct approach to take.

"The first thing is - forget about the rugby," Gatland told Sky Sports News HQ. "His health is the most important thing, and his long-term health.

"He needs to forget about playing for Northampton at the moment and Wales in the Six Nations. He needs to get his health and make sure he sees the right people until he does get the all clear."

Northampton's medical staff used a Head Injury Assessment (HIA) on North before allowing him to return to the field on Saturday.

However, the club have admitted that doctors did not have access to full television footage of the incident at the time, adding: "If evidence suggesting a loss of consciousness had been available to the medical team at the time of assessment, George would not have been allowed to return to the field of play."

Northampton said TV viewers often have a fuller range of replay angles than doctors on the sideline and Gatland says he has some sympathy for the club's medical staff.

Gatland admitted: "I feel sorry for some of the people involved in terms of people saying they didn't see the feed.

"I have seen in the past as well where George has looked like he has been knocked out but he has laid there just to say 'Am I OK?' before he has moved.

"He has gone through the protocols in terms of the HIA and was cleared so you feel for the people that maybe didn't see the incident.

"They have felt like they gone through the correct process and then we have all seen the video and wondered if he was momentarily out. It looks like that on the video but you have got to talk to him about that. I don't know the answer to that.

"You have just got to make sure he looks after himself. Forget about the rugby, because his health is the most important thing."
