Northampton Saints have announced the early release of England prop Alex Corbisiero from his contract.

The 27-year-old has endured a string of injury problems since impressing for the British and Irish Lions in 2013 and he underwent knee surgery in December, after which he announced he would take a year out from the game.

The forward's last match was England's pre-World Cup defeat to France last August when he sustained a back injury, and he has not featured for the Saints at all this season.

The club therefore announced on Tuesday that he has been released from his contract early.

Corbisiero said: "I'd like to thank everyone in the Northampton Saints organisation for all of their support on and off the field these last couple of years.

"I've had some amazing highs and some frustrating lows while at Saints but have always been well-looked after and supported.

"I've shared some incredible memories and made some great friendships along the way. It has been an honour to be part of such a special group of players and I wish them all the best for this season and the future.

"I'd like to thank the Saints' supporters, who have shown me nothing but love. It was a privilege to play in front of them at the Gardens and I will never forget the atmosphere they create and how they rally behind the team week in, week out."

Corbisiero, who has 19 caps for England since his debut in 2011, arrived at Franklin's Gardens in the summer of 2013 from London Irish.

He helped the Saints to both the Aviva Premiership and European Challenge Cup trophies in May 2014, and a top-of-the-table finish the following season.

Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder said: "Alex has made a big contribution on and off the pitch.

"We've all been frustrated that he has not been able to make a consistent run of appearances in the first team. We wish him success in whatever he decides to do in the future."
