Eli Walker has had to drop out of Wales' Rugby World Cup squad due to injury after himself coming in as a late replacement for Leigh Halfpenny.

The 23-year-old Ospreys winger was called up last Tuesday after Wales star Halfpenny suffered an injury in the final warm-up match and was ruled out of the tournament.

The Welsh Rugby Union announced Walker's release and said he will be replaced in the 31-man squad by Gloucester flanker Ross Moriarty.

In a statement, the WRU said: "Due to the nature of the impending competition and the potential for his injury to extend into the latter stages of the Pool stage, the decision has been made to release Eli at present."

Walker only made his full international debut in Wales' 21-35 loss to Ireland on August 8 and his departure leaves the squad with just three specialist wingers - Hallam Amos, Alex Cuthbert and George North - but Bristol fly-half Matthew Morgan can also play there.

Moriarty, 21, twice won the World Junior Championships with England but has been capped twice at senior level for Wales and takes the back row complement in the squad to six.

His father is former Swansea and Wales back-rower Paul Moriarty and his uncle is lock Richard Moriarty. Both played in and his uncle captained the Wales side to what is still their best result at the World Cup, third, in the inaugural World Cup in 1987.
