Rob Howley has been banned for 18 months, nine of those suspended, for breaching World Rugby Anti-Corruption and Betting Regulations.

Howley's ban has been back-dated to before the Rugby World Cup, when he was withdrawn from his duties with Wales, and he will be free to return to the coaching ranks on June 16, 2020.

The 49-year-old, who has stood in for Warren Gatland as Wales head coach and has also been part of Gatland's British & Irish Lions staff (2013 and 2017), was withdrawn from his duties with the team four days before the tournament began in Japan in September.

The former Wales scrum-half, who won 59 caps during a glittering playing career, admitted making 363 bets with a variety of bookmakers involving more than 1,000 matches and including some where Wales were playing.

Howley also admitted placing two bets on individuals playing for Wales, one where the named player would score a try at any point during a match and the other where the named player would score the opening try.

Both players were interviewed during the investigation and their denials of any knowledge of Howley's bets was accepted by the independent panel, which was chaired by Sir Wyn Williams.

The panel was also satisfied that the breach was limited to prohibited betting and no evidence was found that Howley had "supplied, sourced or misused any information pertaining to rugby union".

The Welsh Rugby Union estimated that Howley's betting activity had caused him losses of around £4,000.

Howley also stressed his remorse to the panel for his behaviour and admitted he had let down the Welsh Rugby Union, his former colleagues and family.
