Jamie Roberts has been named Wales captain for the summer Tests against Tonga and Samoa after missing out on selection for the Lions.

Roberts, who has 91 caps for Wales, had been hoping for a place on what would of been his third British and Irish Lions tour but instead will lead out his country in a two-test series in June.

The 30-year-old centre will join a squad including 13 uncapped players that have mostly come through the Wales U20 pathway.

Roberts, who didn't start for Wales in the Six Nations, takes over from Alun Wyn Jones and Sam Warburton who will be leading the Lions in New Zealand and the Cardiff Blues flanker has already taken to Twitter to congratulate Roberts on the announcement.

Roberts said: "I'm immensely honoured to be named captain of Wales for this year's summer tour. It's a proud moment for myself, but more importantly my family and a position of responsibility that I will take huge pride in."

"I'm excited for the new players in the squad as they get the chance to test themselves at this level, and also for the more established players who now have a chance to become leaders in this team."

Head coach Robin McBryde named a 32-man squad for Wales' games against Tonga on June 16 at Eden park and Samoa in Apia on June 23.
