Scott Quinnell calls for Wales to score more tries in this year's Six Nations

Warren Gatland has named uncapped Scarlets scrum-half Aled Davies in his 37-man Wales squad for the Six Nations

Sky Sports' Scott Quinnell praised the quality of Warren Gatland's squad, but called for more tries from Wales in the Six Nations.

Gatland announced his Wales Squad on Tuesday, and the make-up of it is a familiar one. Scrum-half Aled Davies is the only uncapped player, while Tom James returns after a lengthy period away from the international setup.

Quinnell praised the squad assembled by Gatland, but called for more try-scoring escapades from Wales in the Six Nations as they build towards three daunting Tests against the All Blacks in June.

"When you look at it, Wales had a chance to score a try against Australia in the World Cup when they had 13 men but didn't manage to, and against South Africa in the quarter-final they only scored one try," said the former Wales international.

"The versatility is great in terms of options, but having a good balance is the most important thing for a back row."

"They need to be more clinical in those areas and back themselves, because there are some wonderful players in the squad who are capable of scoring tries.

"If there is anything that needs to come out of the Six Nations it's that Wales scores tries, because they need to find that form for the tour to New Zealand in the summer."

The Sky Sports pundit is encouraged by the mixture of youth and experience in the squad.

"We are a small nation who don't have the playing resources that other countries have, but when you look at that squad there is a lot of talent in there.

"The amount of Lions in there, mixed with a few young players who got some exposure in the World Cup, gives Wales a good mix to build a team around."

Quinnell believes the squad's core has been built on the continuity of Warren Gatland's selections.

"Gatland has gone for what he knows, with the notable exception of Aled Davies coming in with Mike Phillips retired and Rhys Webb injured.

"Davies has been outstanding for the Scarlets. He brings something a bit different.

"Another two to note are Tom James, who has been absolutely brilliant on the wing for the Blues, and Josh Turnbull who comes back based on some great form.

"Apart from that, when you look at the squad it practically picks itself."

Sam Warburton will once again lead the Welsh in the Six Nations, with the Blues flanker set for another battle with Ospreys' Justin Tipuric for the openside flanker duties.

Gatland has on occasion picked Warburton and Tipuric in tandem, with the flankers causing havoc at the breakdown in a similar style to David Pocock and Michael Hooper of Australia, but Dan Lydiate is likely the front runner to play in the No 6 jersey.

Quinnell believes that balance is the key for any successful loose trio, and that the back-rowers should complement each other.

"Tipuric is in fine form at the moment, and the way he played against Clermont over the weekend it's difficult to see how he will be left out.

"Ross Moriarty has been playing brilliantly well too. The versatility is great in terms of options, but having a good balance is the most important thing for a back row.

"You could have three world-class loose forwards, but if they're all ball carriers then other aspects could suffer.

"Wales are very lucky in that they have plenty of strength in depth in that position."
