Ireland's hero of the hour Johnny Sexton has credited a club match against Benetton Treviso with giving him the know-how to steal Ireland's dramatic 15-13 victory from France.

Teddy Thomas' fourth-quarter try left Ireland trailing 13-12 in the Stade de France in Saturday's Six Nations encounter before Sexton engineered a 40-plus phase move from Ireland's 22, that finished with him converting a drop goal in what was the game's final act - three minutes after the hooter sounded.

After the match, Ireland's fly-half said a previous club experience playing away to Italian side Benetton Treviso steeled him to attempt the winning kick.

"I went back to many years ago when we played Treviso away and I was in an almost identical position and just flashed back to that," said Sexton. "It just got there in the end."

Reflecting on a contest that saw Ireland start as favourites, the match-winner said: "I'm just happy I got another chance. In the last moment, something caught my eye and I was just happy to get another chance to get victory for the boys.

"We've worked so hard for the last two weeks and it's great to be in the position we are now after an away win."

Ireland full-back Rob Kearney hailed the dramatic finish and Sexton's last-gasp drop goal.

"It's quite incredible really. We probably got out of jail a little bit," the 31-year-old said. "To build that amount of phases, to keep the ball - the conditions are awful - and then the stones on Johnny at the end was incredible.

"I thought it (the drop goal) was a little short. It went in slow motion and it just crept over. We knew it was the last play. He ran off celebrating and we all went along. It was unbelievably special."
