Ireland have named uncapped Munster trio Niall Scannell, Rory Scannell and Andrew Conway in a 40-man squad for the first two rounds of the Six Nations.

Niall Scannell benefits from the hamstring injury to Leinster hooker Sean Cronin which has ruled him out for the tournament and will compete with James Tracy for the right to back up captain Rory Best.

Rory Scannell offers depth in the centre with Ulster star Jared Payne missing the tournament with a kidney injury while Conway is rewarded for a string of excellent performances on the wing for Munster.

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt said: "It has been good to watch the players over the past two months and great to see many of them doing so well.

"As always there were some difficult decisions but we feel that the group is a good mix with a number of key players having good experience and a number of newer players having gained valuable experience and confidence during the summer tour to South Africa and the recent Guinness Series."

Jonathan Sexton is included despite being forced off after just 22 minutes of Leinster's draw in Castres on Friday night with Ulster's Paddy Jackson the only other fly-half in the squad.

Ireland begin their Six Nations campaign with a trip to Edinburgh to take on Scotland on February 4 before travelling to Rome to face Italy a week later.
