John Barclay not expecting to face a more expansive Wales team

Captain John Barclay and defence coach Matt Taylor discuss Saturday's big match in Cardiff

Scotland skipper John Barclay does not think Wales coach Warren Gatland will change his style of rugby, despite selecting 10 Scarlets players for Saturday's Six Nations opener.

Barclay plays for Scarlets himself and the Llanelli outfit have won plenty of plaudits this season for the expansive style of play which has brought them success.

However, Barclay is not convinced the number of Scarlets players in the Wales starting XV means Gatland will adapt his more tight-knit approach.

"Look, we play a certain way at Scarlets that suits the players we have," said Barclay.

"But I don't know if it can be merged. It's a totally different team. They have got 10 guys who play for Scarlets but also five guys who don't.

"It's taken a long time for Scarlets to play that brand of rugby. I don't know if it can be created in a week for the other guys and I don't think they will try to."

Barclay played down his own role in Scotland's preparations but defence coach Matt Taylor says the captain's knowledge of his fellow Scarlets has been valuable.

"It has really helped us," said Taylor. "When you have got a player who is with them day in day out - John is a really astute character and has been able to give us a bit of information and some good insights."

Taylor also said that closing the roof of the Principality Stadium for the Cardiff match is the right way to go.

The decision lies with the visitors and Scotland expressed a preference for an open roof earlier in the week.

But with rain forecast for Cardiff on Saturday, they have now agreed to close the roof, and Taylor said: "You want to play a good game under good conditions, so we are really happy with that."

Scotland have not had much success in Cardiff of late but Taylor thinks a tweak to their preparations has boosted their chances this weekend.

He said: "(Head coach) Gregor has made the change that we do a captain's run here rather than maybe go down a day or two earlier.

"I think that has really helped us with an extra day of preparation at home in an environment we know and are comfortable with. It has worked really well."
