Scotland change five with John Barclay skipper against Wales

Scotland head coach Vern Cotter says John Barclay will do an excellent job as the national team captain in the absence of Greig Laidlaw

Scotland have made five changes to their team for Saturday's Six Nations clash against Wales, with John Barclay captaining the team in the absence of Greig Laidlaw.

Laidlaw has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament by an ankle injury and is replaced at scrum-half by Glasgow's Ali Price.

Sean Maitland has a rib injury suffered on Saracens duty last week so Harlequins flyer Tim Visser replaces him on the right wing.

Up front, Gordon Reid replaces Allan Dell in the front row, John Hardie comes in for Hamish Watson at openside flanker and Ryan Wilson - fit again after an elbow infection - replaces the injured Josh Strauss at No 8.

Head coach Vern Cotter, who has seen his side beat Ireland and lose to France so far, says Scarlets star Barclay is the right man for the captaincy job in Laidlaw's absence.

"John has played a vital role in our leadership group and has led by example throughout this and previous campaigns," said Cotter, who left Barclay out of the squad for the 2015 World Cup.

"It was disappointing to lose Greig Laidlaw. However, we continue to develop a system of shared leadership in this squad, which has supported the transition.

"It'll be a proud moment for John and one which he thoroughly deserves."

Barclay, 30, will captain the side for just the second time, having previously led Scotland against New Zealand in 2010.

Cotter believes his team remain championship contenders - provided they beat the Welsh.

"We've now had two weeks to recover, reflect and prepare a new game plan for Wales," he said. "We know the Welsh will throw everything at us but we will keep our attacking mind-set and look to convert pressure to points as often as possible.

"The players have worked hard to prepare for this game and are really looking forward to putting in a top performance. It's a huge weekend in the championship and we're still right in the mix."
