Greig Laidlaw is confident that Scotland's new attacking dynamic will be key to the nation's most successful Test side in a generation.

The Scottish captain believes their new approach will be critical in creating a fresh identity during the Six Nations this year and help to better last season's fourth-placed finish in the competition.

"This is definitely the best Scotland squad I've been a part of; that's quite an easy question actually for me to answer," the scrum-half said.

"We're starting to get more strength in depth through the squad. But we're not getting ahead of ourselves because we've not won any games in the tournament yet."

Laidlaw believes that the arrival of backline talents like centre Huw Jones and the addition of bonus points to the Six Nations will be an advantage for the Scottish team.

"I think it suits us because of the make-up of our players," the captain said.

"Huw Jones came in on November and played extremely well, there's Stuart Hogg at the back and Sean Maitland doing very well at Saracens too.

"You need to score tries to win games, If you go in and try to defend your way to victory then it just won't work."

Scotland are hoping to seize on their recent record-breaking autumn Test series, which saw the largest ever crowds for matches against Australia, Argentina and Georgia, and dominate in front of their home crowd for their first match against Ireland on February 4.

Laidlaw added: "We're certainly scoring a lot of tries in November, we can hurt teams on that front.

"If we can back that up with strong defensive performances we'd like to think we'd be hard to beat."

It will be head coach Vern Cotter's last Nation tournament before he departs for Montpellier in the summer and is replaced by Glasgow boss Gregor Townsend.

Cotter said: "This is going to be tough, just because there have been a few good performances it doesn't mean the opposition are going to give you games.

"Greig and his boys are looking at and have been trying to develop for a couple of years now."
