Ben Youngs plans to bounce back stronger than ever from knee injury, says Steve Borthwick

Steve Borthwick says Ben Youngs has shown a great attitude after rupturing the MCL ligament of his left knee

England forwards coach Steve Borthwick says Ben Youngs is determined to bounce back stronger than ever after rupturing the MCL in his left knee.

Youngs has been ruled out for the remainder of the Six Nations and possibly the rest of the season after injuring his knee in Sunday's 46-15 victory over Italy.

Borthwick admits the loss of the influential Leicester Tigers number nine is a blow for England but has been impressed with how Youngs has dealt with the setback.

"Clearly [it is] really disappointing for Ben when he has been playing so well and been such an important part of this team over the last period of time," Borthwick said.

"I was chatting to him this morning and the first thing he said to me is he is going to come back in better shape than ever.

"That is a great attitude when you can have a setback like that. He is already looking at it as an opportunity to improve.

"So that is a great credit to him and his personality. We wish him all the best in his recovery."

Saracens scrum-half Richard Wigglesworth has been called into the match-day 23 for Wales' visit to Twickenham on Saturday, most likely as cover for Danny Care from the bench, in his first England appearance since the 2015 World Cup.

Borthwick admits England are lucky to be able to upon a player of Wigglesworth's calibre and experience and insists the coaching staff are feeling good about their depth at the position.

"Richard has been around the squad over the last period of time and he is an excellent player," Borthwick said.

"He has played at the top level of European rugby for a long time. He has a lot of experience at international level as well and he has been playing very well.

"So we have got a lot of competition in that position. It is a really healthy position for our squad."
