Paul Gustard excited by new England squad members and would savour Six Nations hat-trick

England defence coach Paul Gustard is backing the squad to overcome injuries and win a record third consecutive Six Nations title

Paul Gustard is excited by the young talent coming through England's ranks ahead of next weekend's Six Nations opener against Italy.

Eddie Jones' plans for the trip to Rome have been beset by injury, with the best part of 20 possible inclusions either ruled out or struggling to make it back to full fitness.

There was a boost for Jones on Thursday at their training camp in Portugal, with back-row veteran Chris Robshaw able to progress to working outside with a number of his forward colleagues as he recovers from a back problem.

Gustard is confident there are uncapped and inexperienced players in the party who have already shown enough to come into the matchday squad and perform at a high level if required.

"Whenever there is an injury there is an opportunity," defence coach Gustard said.

"It's really exciting to see some of these uncapped players we have got in - eight of them in the squad at the moment - and see them train, take someone else's shirt and perform how they have done in the first two days is great for English rugby.

"I've been really impressed with [flanker] Gary Graham from Newcastle. He's a tough no-nonsense kind of player, but he just digs it out. For his first kind of exposure to a national organisation he has been tremendous."

Captain Dylan Hartley said on Wednesday that England had to accept injuries go hand-in-hand with a tough sport, and Gustard said there would be no let up in pressure ahead of their February 4 date at the Stadio Olimpico.

Jones has won the Six Nations both years since taking over as coach at the end of the 2015 World Cup and Gustard says a hat-trick would be something to savour.

He added: "To get three from three is a tremendous achievement, it doesn't matter which XV or 23 have those jerseys. It would be a tremendous accomplishment for English rugby.

Chris Robshaw gives England an injury boost ahead of the Six Nations, as he takes part in their training camp.

"We're really looking forward to it and we're going out there to win in Italy - whatever 23 go out I believe we've got a strong enough team to get that done.

"There's always pressure on us from Eddie. He's got some great soundbites, hasn't he. But what he says is very accurate. We're going out there to get the Six Nations, we're not there to try and retain it - we're there to win it.

"The mindset the team has adopted is this hunting mentality. We're going out there to chase teams down and that equates to pressure, to hunting them in defence, to creating our kicking game and how we attack."
