Saracens hooker Jamie George has revealed he is aiming to overtake skipper Dylan Hartley as England's first choice hooker.

George, who created history for the most caps without a start when he came on for his 17th substitute appearance against Ireland on Saturday, has insisted he is aiming to be England's first choice come the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

The 26-year-old hooker replaced Hartley in the third quarter of each Six Nations game during England's most recent title success, providing a key impact as one of Eddie Jones' 'finishers'.

"I would love to start," George told the Times. "It was my old man who actually told me about the record. My mum said, 'At least you'll be remembered for something'.

"I'm not resigned to it, but it is what it is and I'm very appreciative to play. Dylan's [Hartley] doing a brilliant job as captain and it's an unfortunate situation to be behind him.

"Eddie's [Jones] said starting is achievable. That gives me something to hold on to. He often speaks about the 2019 World Cup and being the No 1 team. I want to be peaking there.

"I'll be 28 heading into that tournament and I hope to be pushing to start."

Jones emphasised the role of substitutes by calling England's options on the bench "finishers" last month.

George says he understood the significance of the role and made the most of his opportunities with England as a replacement.

"The importance that Eddie puts on the 'finishers', the bench, definitely helps," George added.

"I would always try to challenge them in terms of what more they needed to see from me. But the thing about Eddie, Steve [Borthwick] and Guzzy [Paul Gustard] is they are really honest.

"A lot of people ask me about my time with England and see it as a negative, but I've progressed."
