England head coach Eddie Jones admits he made mistakes in the run-up to the Six Nations opener against France last weekend.

His side largely struggled against an impressive French side at Twickenham but managed to claim a hard-fought 19-16 victory thanks to a late try from substitute Ben Te'o.

Jones admits he made mistakes in his preparation for the game and insists he has gone back to basics for this weekend's clash with Wales in Cardiff.

"We all make mistakes, we're all human," he said. "We just got a few things wrong; I don't think my coaching of the team was great.

"We set out at the start of the Six Nations to build towards the World Cup. We want to win the Six Nations but we're building towards the World Cup.

"So I've got a number of strategies and different methodologies in place that are longer term, and some of those short-term become a little bit of a distraction.

"So this week we've pared back a bit and focused on the things that are going to count for the Test match preparation."

Much of the build-up to this weekend's fixture has centred on the retractable roof at the Principality Stadium.

Jones has the final say over whether it will be open or closed when England visit Cardiff but the Australian refused to reveal his decision at a press conference on Thursday.

"I have a list of priorities at the start of the week. When it's time to make that decision I'll prioritise that decision," he said.

"It will matter when I make the decision. It's not my decision to make on whether it will increase the atmosphere when it's closed. I'm not an entertainer, I'm a coach - so I'll make that decision when it's appropriate."

Jones also confirmed that Jack Nowell will start against the Welsh in place of Jonny May due to his superior ball carrying abilities.

"Wales traditionally like to play ball in play, to have high ball in play," said Jones. "Jack Nowell's great attribute is to be able to carry through contact.

"They're not a side you get around because of the way they defend. You've got to go through them so I think his running skills this week will suit us better than Johnny."
