Nick Mallett is one of the front runners in the RFU's search for the new England rugby head coach, according to Sky sources.

The RFU is looking for candidates to replace Stuart Lancaster, who stepped down following England's disappointing World Cup campaign.

Sky Sports News HQ understands that Mallett, the former South Africa and Italy coach, is one of the leading men on the shortlist.

Jake White, Eddie Jones and Michael Cheika are also understood to be on the RFU's list. The four candidates all fit the criteria described on Wednesday by RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie.

The RFU stated they are looking for candidates with "proven international experience".

England job interests White

Jake White has told SSN HQ he is interested in the England job...

Mallett is a surprise name on the list. He was on the RFU's shortlist when Lancaster was appointed in 2011, but has not coached in international rugby since leaving the Italy post after the 2011 World Cup.

He has since been working as a TV pundit for Supersport in South Africa.

Jones says he has had no contact with the RFU and would not be interested in the role, having only just been appointed coach of South African Super Rugby side Stormers.

White told SSN HQ this week that he would be keen on the job if offered it.

Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond insisted that Lancaster's departure was inevitable because of results and stated who his choice would be.

Diamond told SSNHQ: "They need to get the right man. We need proven winners and with the last two appointments we haven't. I think the ideal candidate is sitting at Northampton - Jim Mallinder."
