Dorian West believes Northampton coach Jim Mallinder would be a good choice as England's next head coach.

Stuart Lancaster stepped down from the role on Wednesday afternoon and Mallinder has emerged as one of the early favourites to succeed him.

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Northampton forwards coach said "he was really disappointed for Lancaster" but feels that Mallinder would do a good job given the chance.

"Jim's been in the Premiership for eight years, not just here but with Sale as well, and a spell coaching with England under 21s - so he knows what the job is about, and is as good a bloke as I've worked with."

Mallinder was previously in consideration to take over as England head coach four years ago, after Martin Johnson left the post.

Speaking in October, Mallinder said "One day I would love to coach at international rugby level, but clearly Northampton Saints is my priority at the moment.

"This year we have a really important year, we were disappointed we didn't manage to win the (Aviva Premiership) last year, but we managed to get through to semi-final, so this year Northampton Saints are my focus."

Jones, Jake White, Conor O'Shea and Rob Baxter are some of the names being linked with the England job - White and Jones both have previous international experience with South Africa and Japan respectively.

Will Greenwood spoke to Sky Sports News HQ earlier and tipped the RFU to go for an established coach with major honours to their name, instead of a home grown coach.

Greenwood said, "I suspect they will go for a super coach who has won some major honours previously, Warren Gatland, Steve Hansen, Wayne Smith, Joe Schmidt, people of that calibre who've dealt with huge amounst of pressure previously, and that's the way the England job is these days, it's more than just a whistle and a tracksuit."
