Uncapped full-back Blair Kinghorn has been included in Scotland's squad for the forthcoming Six Nations.

Head coach Gregor Townsend says his inclusion in the 40-man party is a reward for his excellent performances with Edinburgh this season.

Kinghorn is one of four untried players, although the other three have all been involved in previous Scotland camps.

They are Edinburgh prop Murray McCallum, Glasgow prop D'Arcy Rae and scrum-half Nathan Fowles - also of Edinburgh.

The squad is also boosted by the return of several experienced players, absent from recent campaigns, including scrum-half Greig Laidlaw, lock Richie Gray, centres Mark Bennett and Duncan Taylor, and back-row David Denton.

Laidlaw, Gray and Bennett have not featured for the dark blues since last year's championship, while it was 2015 when returning prop Jon Welsh last saw international action and longer still for 36-year-old veteran hooker Scott Lawson.

Speaking about Kinghorn, at Tuesday's press conference, Townsend said: "This will be his first involvement and it's simply down to his great form this season.

"He was in line to be involved in November but suffered a dip in form in October - which put paid to that.

"But he's played well since then and I've spoken to the Edinburgh coaches who say he has been really professional and diligent and has had consistently good performances for Edinburgh.

"He's good in attack and improved his defence, and he used to play stand-off - so has a good overall skillset.

"He has a good kicking game and, at 6 ft 5in, has the potential to be a real threat in the air but his key strength is his speed."

Scarlets back-row John Barclay will continue to captain the side, having taken over the mantle from Laidlaw in 2017.

Townsend also explained his reasons for naming a 40-man squad - which is larger than normal.

He said: "It is largely due to the fact that the guys in November did very well. So they remain in the squad.

"There were some who weren't available in November and are back playing again, and the Six Nations is also very demanding physically.

"We want to ensure that we build on the momentum the players generated in 2017."

Scotland begin their Six Nations campaign against Wales in Cardiff on February 3.
