Ireland flanker Tommy O’Donnell has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup with the hip injury he suffered against Wales on Saturday.

The back-row forward was taken off on a stretcher in the closing stages of Ireland’s 35-21 win in Cardiff and subsequently sent for a scan.

The result of that assessment is that O’Donnell will now miss the World Cup, which begins for the Irish against Canada in the Welsh capital on September 19.

"Investigations at University Hospital Wales yesterday afternoon confirmed that Tommy suffered a hip dislocation in the game against Wales," a statement by the Irish RFU said.

"He will be limited to non-weight bearing activity for at least six weeks and has unfortunately been ruled out of participating in RWC15."
