Owen Farrell is happy to concede centre stage to old school friend George Ford when England face Samoa at Twickenham on Saturday.

Farrell makes the move into midfield in England's third match of the autumn, having struggled at No 10 in the narrow defeats by New Zealand and South Africa.

The switch gives Ford the chance of a first Test start for his country and Farrell is happy to give over the play-calling responsibilities to a player he has known since the age of 16, coach Stuart Lancaster having told the Bath man 'you're the boss, so get bossing.'

Responsibility

"It's George's first start so it's good for him to have the whole responsibility. I know he'll be brilliant," Farrell said.

"He'll love it and it's good that he's going into the game with the whole package. I agree with what's happening. I'll concentrate on my job, which is helping him out.

"I like the responsibility of goal-kicking, but I'll not be too down-heartened about not doing it because I have a job to concentrate on.

"If George asks me if I want a crack at one, I'll say yes! Him doing the kicking hasn't stopped be practising this week, but I'm sure I won't be needed."

Farrell says there will never be any animosity over losing the No 10 jersey and can see why Lancaster wanted to pair him and Ford together in the same back-line, something that has only happened in senior rugby so far in Ford's brief international appearances off the bench.

Something different

"I'm chuffed to be playing. I didn't for one second think that even if things were going brilliantly and we were winning every game that I was going to start every game from now until whenever," Farrell added.

"I've never been that naive to think I'd play every game. This is a chance to try something different.

"As far as I see it you've got another 10 playing at 12. A lot depends on what you want from your 12.

"I'm not an out and out classic centre. What we will try to do is get some organisation to hopefully give a couple of options. I'll obviously be playing one pass out, but I'll still be playing the same way.

"I don't think I'll pipe down, it'll be a different way of talking, more about feeding information in. It will be more about giving George options and there will be times where I'm sure we'll swap around. We can afford to interchange like that."
