Bath boss plays down remarkable run

Bath head coach Steve Meehan has refused to get carried away despite steering his side into the Guinness Premiership play-off places with one game remaining. Meehan's men have timed their top four charge to perfection and sealed an eighth win in nine matches with a 35-19 bonus-point victory over Wasps in the St George's Day game at Twickenham. A semi-final with Leicester looms large should Bath overcome Leeds in two weeks, although Meehan is taking nothing for granted. He said: "There's a lot of rugby yet; a lot of things can happen. There's the small matter of a match against Leeds who have been playing well, dogging it out.

Belief

"But we've always believed that we could win these last three games. The players have done very well to achieve that. "For the first time this season we get the opportunity to play a game knowing that it's in our hands. "We've come a long way since the first four months of the season," continued Meehan, whose side were a lowly 11th in the New Year. "Work and belief in one another was how the spirit built up in those unenjoyable moments. "We're playing well but we can play better, that's the challenge we throw to the team every week. We've won well and we've had to win tough at times." Despite a hat-trick from Joe Maddock, centre Olly Barkley scooped the man-of-the-match award for his 20-point haul. "Barkley played very well," added Meehan. "There was a delightful moment in the first half, a great step, acceleration and a sense of space. He kicked beautifully too.
Hurt
"But Michael Claassens has been up since 3am feeling very ill. The way he captained that side was a brilliant effort. Wasps director of rugby Steve Hanks gave due credit to the visitors but said: "We weren't as accurate as we have been in recent weeks. We needed to respect the ball more. "We gave a good Bath side far too much room and latitude. If you do that they are going to hurt you. "But we didn't throw in the towel, the bench came on and worked hard for us." Reflecting on moments that turned the game, Hanks added: "There was an overthrown line-out and we threw an intercept try. "We lost our way and handed the momentum back to them. It's something we've done too many times this year."
