Scottish Rugby has described the verbal abuse suffered by Eddie Jones from sections of their supporters as "disgusting behaviour" following England's Calcutta Cup defeat last weekend.

The England coach travelled alone by train from Edinburgh to Manchester to be a guest of Sir Alex Ferguson for Manchester United's Premier League meeting with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday and is understood to have been subjected to abuse from both rugby and football supporters during the journey and on his arrival.

Jones continued to use public transport to complete his journey to London after the match had finished but has since admitted he will not continue to do so in the future.

"Scottish Rugby is appalled by the verbal abuse suffered by Eddie Jones," read a statement on Twitter.

"The disgusting behaviour of those involved does not represent the values of our sport or its fans. The dignity Eddie and the England team showed on Saturday is in stark contrast to this ugly incident."

British Transport Police [BTP] released a statement revealing a man had been subject to verbal abuse on a train journey from Manchester to London on Sunday.

"We received a third party report of verbal abuse towards a man on board a train between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston on Sunday 25 February," read the statement.

"This was at around 7pm - 7.30pm. BTP officers met the train at London Euston. No arrests have been made and enquiries continue."

Jones said on Wednesday that he had seen no reason not to use public transport but that his experience over the weekend caused him to feel uncomfortable.

"I'm a human being," said Jones. "I don't consider myself any different from anyone else, so for me to travel on public transport I thought was OK.

"But I'll make sure I won't in future. It's as simple as that. I can't because it was shown on Sunday what happens when I do. That's the world we live in. I was massively surprised. It wasn't comfortable."

When asked whether the abuse was physical or verbal, Jones replied: "A bit of both. It's part of the challenge. As an Australian coaching England, there were always going to be challenges and that's just one of them."
